KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has asserted that the establishment of local government following the formation of the federal democratic republic has brought Singha Durbar closer to the people.
Speaking at the 32nd anniversary event of the Municipality Association of Nepal (MuAN) held in the capital today, PM Oli emphasized the indispensability of local governance in a federal setup.
He remarked that there is no alternative to the local government, as it stands as the closest and most accessible form of government to serve the public.
The Prime Minister highlighted that the strong local government structure emerged following the abolition of the monarchy — an outcome of the long struggle and sacrifice of the Nepali people.
While acknowledging debates around the provincial structures, PM Oli pointed out that no questions have been raised regarding the local government framework.
“Therefore, there is no alternative to local government, as this is the closest government to serve the people,” he said.
The Prime Minister further assured that the issues and demands of local levels would be addressed gradually through the formulation of suitable policies and legislation.
He stressed the need for cooperation and collaboration among all three levels of government — federal, provincial, and local — to ensure smooth governance and public service delivery.
Addressing recent activities advocating the restoration of the monarchy, PM Oli urged everyone to focus on strengthening the republican system.
He cautioned against forgetting the autocratic rule imposed during the monarchy and called for collective efforts to consolidate the achievements of the federal democratic republic.
