Police officer suspended for assaulting young man in Chitwan

CHITWAN: Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Buddhi Bahadur Gharti Bhujel has been suspended following widespread outrage over a viral video showing him assaulting a young man on the bypass road section of Bharatpur Metropolitan City in Chitwan.

The incident occurred on the night of December 30, 2024, when Bhujel, stationed at the temporary police post in Ganeshdham, kicked the young man repeatedly during a motorcycle check.

The video, shared on Facebook, shows Bhujel kicking the man while he lay on the road near an electric pole. He reportedly accused the man of ‘showing his power’ and ‘making a phone call’ before assaulting him further.

After the video went viral, it sparked nationwide condemnation and prompted the Chitwan Police to act swiftly. An investigation committee, led by DSP Gyan Kumar Mahato, was formed to probe the incident.

SP Gautam Mishra, Chief of the District Police Office, confirmed Bhujel’s suspension and assured that the investigation is progressing.

“Action will be taken against the culprits in accordance with the rules,” SP Mishra said.
