RSP to finalize proportional candidates considering party unification process

KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has said it will finalize its proportional representation (PR) candidates for the upcoming House of Representatives election by taking into account members who joined the party through the unification process.

The party said the selection will consider the needs of newly integrated members, potential cooperation and unity discussed through the High-Level Dialogue Committee, as well as the agreement reached between Gen-Z leaders and the government.

According to the RSP, the deadline for submitting PR candidacies has been extended until December 20, and discussions will be held on Friday and Saturday for candidates who submit their applications within the extended timeline.

In a four-point notice issued through social media on Friday, the party said the location for discussions with candidates and the publication of the first-phase preliminary list will be determined based on the province linked to each candidate’s voter ID. It said candidates whose names appear under a province different from that of their voter ID have been asked to coordinate with their respective provincial chairpersons and inform the party.

The party said participation in all collective activities outlined in the candidate selection timeline is mandatory for preliminary candidates. It warned that, except in cases approved by the party secretariat, failure to participate will lead to automatic cancellation of candidacy.

The RSP said the decision to extend the candidacy deadline was taken by the party secretariat meeting held on December 11 considering the natural requirements arising from the party unification process, possible cooperation and unity efforts facilitated by the High-Level Dialogue Committee, and the agreement between Gen-Z leaders and the government. It added that discussions and door-to-door interactions for candidates applying by Friday and Saturday will be conducted within Kathmandu Valley and Bagmati Province.

The party further said that with the publication of the first-phase preliminary list, the claim and objection process has automatically begun. Claims or objections against candidates can be filed with the concerned provincial chairperson, the Party Election Commission, the central office, or directly via email.

Clarifying the issue of cluster representation, the RSP said that as the Election Commission of Nepal is currently reviewing cluster composition, the final closed list will be prepared strictly in accordance with the structure determined by the Commission. It added that various elements of the party’s internal candidate selection process will remain subject to decisions made by the Election Commission.
