Election Commission urges political parties to support ‘green elections’

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has called on political parties to support efforts to make the upcoming House of Representatives election on March 5, 2026 an environment-friendly or “green election.”

In a discussion with party representatives held recently, the EC encouraged the use of digital and sustainable methods for campaigning instead of traditional materials such as paper leaflets, plastic banners, and fuel-based rallies, which contribute to environmental pollution.

Yagya Prasad Bhattarai, Joint Secretary of the Commission, explained that green elections aim to minimize the use of non-biodegradable and polluting materials.

“We are promoting elections that are digital, sustainable, and pollution-free,” he said, adding that such practices are in line with modern global standards and environmental responsibility.

Representatives of political parties present at the meeting expressed their willingness to participate in the election, provided that a conducive environment is ensured. They also responded positively to the idea of making the elections greener.

The Election Commission had previously promoted eco-friendly practices during the 2079 BS elections and is continuing its efforts to institutionalize sustainable election management.
