Deputy Speaker Rana calls for collective commitment to uphold Constitution

KATHMANDU: Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Indira Rana, has urged all citizens and institutions to contribute to the protection, implementation, and promotion of the Constitution.

Extending her best wishes on the occasion of Constitution Day, Deputy Speaker Rana expressed confidence that the Constitution’s effective implementation would help fulfill the basic needs of the people and realize national aspirations for sustainable peace, good governance, development, and prosperity.

“Elections are the soul of democracy, ensuring direct participation of the people,” she said, emphasizing that holding timely elections and re-establishing elected institutions are essential steps toward constitutional implementation.

Rana highlighted that empowering and activating elected bodies is a core constitutional demand, as these institutions are key to exercising the sovereignty of the people. She noted that the Constitution—being the supreme law of the land—must guide state governance, ensure the enforcement of fundamental and human rights, and guarantee the fair and equitable distribution of democratic benefits.

She further stated that federalism, secularism, competitive multiparty democracy, civil liberties, rule of law, periodic elections, an independent judiciary, full press freedom, inclusivity, proportional representation, and democratic norms and values are foundational features of Nepal’s Constitution.

“If we fail to address the political, social, economic, and cultural challenges of our society in a way that makes democracy tangible in people’s daily lives, then no matter what we call it, it cannot be true democracy,” the Deputy Speaker cautioned. She stressed the importance of coordinated efforts from the Election Commission, security agencies, political parties, and civil society to ensure the Constitution’s spirit is fully realized.
