Ruling parties not to move ahead with impeachment motion against Deputy Speaker

The ruling Nepali Congress and CPN-UML have decided not to immediately pursue an impeachment motion against Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar. The decision comes amid reports that both parties were collecting signatures to initiate impeachment proceedings. Mahesh Bartaula, Chief Whip of CPN-UML, clarified that neither the coalition nor the ruling parties have reached a conclusion to file an impeachment against Deputy Speaker Rana Magar.

Deputy Speaker Ranamagar calls Shekhar Koirala amid push for her removal 

At a time when the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML have intensified efforts to remove Deputy Speaker Indira Ranamagar, she, currently in the US, has contacted Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala on Tuesday. The phone call came after reports surfaced that Congress and UML had begun collecting signatures for her removal, sparking anger among Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and CPN (Maoist Centre).

UML attempts to block Bidya Devi Bhandari’s participation in Morang event

The CPN-UML reportedly tried to prevent former President Bidya Devi Bhandari from attending a party-related program in Morang. Parshuram Basnet, the in-charge of Biratnagar Metropolitan and a loyalist of UML Chair KP Sharma Oli, allegedly instructed party workers via social media to avoid the event. Basnet claimed that no official program had been scheduled at the UML district office and urged cadres not to be misled by promotions suggesting Bhandari’s participation.

Birgunj jail building dilapidated; number of inmates exceeds capacity

The physical infrastructure of the District Jail in Birgunj is in a dilapidated condition, and the number of inmates has significantly exceeded its capacity, creating serious management challenges. Although the jail was originally built to accommodate around 1,000 inmates, it is currently housing more than 1,310 prisoners and detainees, according to Khimraj Bhusal, Chief of the District Jail, Parsa.

RSP warns of street protests if Deputy Speaker is removed

The opposition Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has warned it will launch street protests if Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar is forced out of her post. The warning comes amid reports that the ruling Nepali Congress and CPN-UML are collecting lawmakers’ signatures to file an impeachment motion against Rana Magar.

Maoist Center opposes move to remove Deputy Speaker Rana

The CPN (Maoist Center) has concluded that attempts to remove Deputy Speaker Indira Rana are being made with ill intent. At a party office-bearers’ meeting held at Parisdanda on Tuesday, the Maoist Center decided to oppose the move. Following the meeting, party spokesperson Agni Sapkota said the government is becoming authoritarian and acting against the interests of the country and the people.

Former President Bhandari: I am now active in UML as a general member

Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Tuesday afternoon visited the CPN-UML Morang district committee office in Biratnagar. Defying instructions from the party’s central leadership not to organize any programs, Bhandari addressed UML leaders and cadres at the Panchali-based office. Upon arrival, she garlanded the statues of people’s leaders Madan Bhandari, Man Mohan Adhikari, and Pushpa Lal Shrestha.

Rabi Lamichhane faces health issues in jail due to vitamin D deficiency

Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane, who is currently serving jail time over his alleged involvement in the Supreme Cooperative fraud case, has developed health complications due to a lack of vitamin D. Lamichhane has been in custody since April 7. Initially held at the Bhairahawa prison, he was later transferred to Nakkhu Jail in Lalitpur. According to doctors, over four months of confinement without sufficient exposure to sunlight has led to vitamin D deficiency in his body.

Youth question govt: Where is Bipin Joshi?

Youths have staged a spontaneous demonstration in Maitighar on Tuesday, urging the government to immediately disclose the whereabouts of Bipin Joshi. During the program, participants pressed the government with the question, “Where is Bipin Joshi?”

Nepal clinch first victory in Top End T20 Series

Nepal registered their first win in the ongoing Top End T20 Series in Australia’s Northern Territory, defeating Hobart Hurricanes by 66 runs in their fourth match on Tuesday. Chasing a target of 181, Hobart were bowled out for just 114 runs in 16.1 overs. Nepal’s Nandan Yadav starred with the ball, taking 5 wickets for 17 runs in his three-over spell. Captain Rohit Paudel, Kushal Bhurtel, Rijhan Dhakal, and Sandeep Lamichhane chipped in with a wicket each.

Visitors flock to see flying cars at NADA Auto Show

Flying cars have become the main attraction at the ongoing NADA Auto Show 2025, drawing large crowds of curious visitors to Bhrikutimandap, where the event kicked off on Tuesday. The show was inaugurated by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who also toured the exhibition, including a highlight display of Deepal’s EVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle), commonly referred to as a flying car.

NEPSE warns public against misleading stock market content on social media

Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) has expressed concern over misleading and unauthorized content related to the stock market circulating on social media. In an official statement, NEPSE spokesperson Murahari Parajuli said false claims, fake stock tips, buy-sell recommendations, and counterfeit videos or audios in NEPSE’s name have appeared online, which could negatively affect investors’ confidence.

Unified Socialist calls Standing Committee meeting to address internal disputes

The Unified Socialist party has scheduled a Standing Committee meeting for September 10 to address ongoing internal disputes. The meeting, to be held at the party’s central office in Aloknagar, will focus on various issues including the organization of provincial, district, and affiliated committee conventions, resolution of internal conflicts, and formulation of upcoming party strategies, according to Damodar Aryal, Deputy Head of the party’s Central Propaganda Department.

NEPSE index rises by 6.51 points

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index on Tuesday increased by 6.51 points, closing at 2,776.90 points. According to NEPSE, a total of 13,124,310 shares from 316 companies were traded in 61,784 transactions, generating a total turnover of Rs 5.63 billion. All sectoral sub-indices recorded gains in Tuesday’s trading.

Home Minister highlights Nepal’s commitment to disaster preparedness

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak said the government is working closely with both international and national partners in all stages of disaster management, underlining Nepal’s commitment to strengthening humanitarian response and preparedness. Addressing the Nepal Humanitarian Conference 2025 in Kathmandu on the occasion of World Humanitarian Day, Minister Lekhak stressed the need for regional unity, exchange of experiences, and practical solutions to address disasters and humanitarian crises. The conference was held under the theme “Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities.”

Loan interest rates fall to five-year low, but credit demand remains weak

Loan interest rates in Nepal’s banking sector have dropped to their lowest level in five years, creating what entrepreneurs describe as a favorable environment for borrowing. Yet, despite the cheap credit, demand for loans remains sluggish. According to Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the average interest rate on loans from commercial banks stood at 8.43 percent in mid-July 2021. It climbed to 11.62 percent in 2022 and further to 12.30 percent in 2023. Since then, however, the rate has steadily declined, falling to 7.99 percent by mid-May 2025, the lowest in half a decade.

SC opens door to investigation into Gaur Massacre

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) stated that once the full text of the verdict is received, it will initiate necessary legal steps, including further study and investigation as outlined by the court.

Gold price drops by Rs 1,200 per tola, silver also down

The price of gold fell by Rs 1,200 per tola on Tuesday, according to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association. With the decline, gold is being traded at Rs 195,100 per tola, down from Rs 196,300 per tola on Monday. Earlier, on August 8, gold had hit a record high of Rs 199,400 per tola before starting to decline.

Health workers’ committee protests expansion of MBBS, BDS seats in private colleges

The Struggle Committee for a Safe Workplace for Health Workers has strongly objected to the Medical Education Commission’s decision to increase the number of seats in MBBS and BDS programs at private medical colleges. In a statement issued on Monday, the committee described the decision as biased and unscientific, demanding its immediate withdrawal. It argued that most colleges lack the capacity to accommodate more than 100 students, yet the commission has allowed higher intakes, which it warned would compromise the quality of medical education.
