RSP warns of street protests if Deputy Speaker is removed

KATHMANDU: The opposition Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has warned it will launch street protests if Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar is forced out of her post.

The warning comes amid reports that the ruling Nepali Congress and CPN-UML are collecting lawmakers’ signatures to file an impeachment motion against Rana Magar.

“We hear that signatures are being gathered! They are plotting to unseat a daughter of the indigenous community who has fought social struggles,” RSP spokesperson Manish Jha said. “If this drama is staged in parliament, the answer will come from the streets.”

Jha also accused Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba of distributing state positions as favors. “For Oli and Deuba, who sell posts to family, relatives and middlemen, this transformation in inclusion has become intolerable,” he remarked.

Earlier, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, chair of the main opposition CPN (Maoist Centre), also expressed opposition to moves against the Deputy Speaker. Speaking to reporters at the party’s central office in Parisdanda on Tuesday, Dahal said Congress and UML would be making a mistake if they attempted to remove Rana Magar, and warned that his party would resist the effort.

Meanwhile, CPN-UML Chief Whip Mahesh Bartaula clarified in Singha Durbar that his party is not currently in favor of impeaching and removing the Deputy Speaker.
