China Foundation for Rural Development celebrates 10 years in Nepal

KATHMANDU: The China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD) marked its 10th anniversary in Nepal with a special event held in Kathmandu on Monday, highlighting a decade of contributions to rural development, education, and disaster relief.

The ceremony was attended by Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Chen Song, CFRD Executive Director Chen Hongtao, former ministers, political leaders, diplomats, and representatives of development partners.

Ambassador Chen praised CFRD’s initiatives in Nepal, noting that its efforts reflect not only support for communities but also the enduring friendship between China and Nepal as the two nations mark 70 years of diplomatic ties. “China is committed to continuing collaboration in sustainable development, humanitarian assistance, and community-focused programmes in Nepal,” he said, stressing the importance of mutual cooperation for prosperity and shared development goals.

Nanda Lal Majhi, Vice-Chairperson of Nepal’s Social Welfare Council, lauded CFRD’s impact in education, agriculture, and community empowerment. He said the foundation’s work has gone beyond immediate relief, helping communities develop long-term resilience and capacity.

Similarly, CFRD Executive Director Chen Hongtao emphasized the foundation’s commitment to blending China’s poverty reduction experience with Nepal’s local needs to promote inclusive and sustainable growth. “This celebration reaffirms our shared goal of building a more resilient future for rural communities in Nepal,” he noted.

On the occasion, agreements were signed between Kimtang’s Tea Project in Nuwakot, Khokana and Gotikhel villages of Lalitpur, and three cooperatives from China’s Sichuan Province. The pacts aim to foster agricultural cooperation, knowledge exchange, and rural revitalization. The signing was witnessed by Ambassador Chen Song and former Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala.

The event also featured the launch of a research publication documenting CFRD’s decade-long journey in Nepal, recognition of NGO partners, and exhibition stalls showcasing women’s products from the Women’s Occupational Support program, along with other community development achievements.

CFRD’s Nepal Country Director Zou Zhiqiang, local mayors and deputies, UN representatives, and other dignitaries also attended the program.
