Tinkune violence linked to crime, not religion: Home Minister

KATHMANDU: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has said that the arson and violence that took place in Tinkune, Kathmandu, on March 28 was a criminal act and should not be associated with any religion or faith.

Responding to lawmakers’ questions during Monday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Minister Lekhak stated that advocating for monarchy, as was done during the incident, goes against Nepal’s constitution.

“Violence cannot be justified in the name of religion,” he emphasized.

He informed the House that those involved in the incident have been taken into custody and are currently under investigation and prosecution.

He made it clear that anyone involved in criminal activities, regardless of their background, will be brought under the purview of the law.

Minister Lekhak also said that the government is alert and vigilant to prevent such criminal incidents. He asserted that the organizers must take responsibility for the violent activities in Tinkune.

Additionally, he informed that the government is providing free treatment to those injured in the incident, with two individuals still undergoing treatment.

Lawmakers Prem Suwal, Nisha Dangi, and Sobita Gautam had raised questions to the Home Minister regarding the incident.
