Supreme Court set to deliver verdict on National ID dispute

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court is preparing to announce its verdict today regarding the national identity card dispute.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut and Justices Abdul Aziz Musalman and Nripdhoj Niraula will pronounce the verdict.

The case, which concluded on January 10, was initially set for a verdict presentation on January 13 but was removed from the schedule. The final decision is now slated for today.

The issue, involving constitutional interpretation, was referred to a full bench by Justices Mahesh Sharma Poudel and Nityanand Pandey.

The dispute began with a writ filed on July 5, 2024, accusing the government of delaying the issuance of national identity cards and arguing that making the card mandatory would prevent senior citizens from receiving their social security allowances.

On July 14, 2024, Justice Binod Sharma ordered a written response from the government.

Following a stay order on August 21, the government filed a petition to vacate the order, requesting the writ proceed with a written response.

The writ petition challenges the government’s decision to make the national identity card mandatory for accessing social security allowances, mobile SIM cards, and public services.
