Oli panel sweeps UML leadership, wins 17 of 19 office-bearer posts

As many as 17 out of 19 office-bearer positions of the CPN-UML have been won by candidates from party chairperson KP Sharma Oli’s panel, according to the final results of the 11th National Convention. Only two office-bearers were elected from the panel led by Ishwar Pokharel. Gokarna Bista was elected vice-chairperson, while Yogesh Kumar Bhattarai secured the post of deputy general secretary.

KP Sharma Oli wins third term as UML chairperson

KP Sharma Oli has been elected for a third term as chairperson of CPN-UML. Oli defeated Ishwar Pokharel, who had challenged him after long-standing support within the party, by a wide margin. According to the latest update from the Election Commission, Oli has received 1,663 votes in the race for CPN-UML chairperson.

Shankar Pokhrel elected UML general secretary

Shankar Pokhrel has emerged victorious in the race for general secretary of CPN-UML, according to the results of the party’s internal election. Pokhrel received 1,228 votes, while his closest competitor, Surendra Pandey, secured 999 votes. In the same election, KP Sharma Oli has already won the post of party chairperson by a large margin.

Gold, silver prices rise in Nepali market on Thursday

Gold and silver prices increased in the domestic market on Thursday, according to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association. The price of gold has been fixed at Rs 260,400 per tola, up by Rs 700 compared to the previous trading day. On Wednesday, gold was traded at Rs 259,700 per tola. The all-time high for gold in the Nepali market remains Rs 260,700 per tola, recorded on Monday.

Country could head toward crisis if election is not held on March 5: Gagan Thapa

Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa has said that holding the election on March 5 is the only way to steer the country out of its current sensitive situation. Speaking at a program in Pokhara, Thapa warned that choosing any alternative path instead of conducting the election on the scheduled date could cause irreparable damage to the country. Referring to past events, Thapa said that when KP Sharma Oli became prime minister after the Maoists and UML united to form the Nepal Communist Party and later dissolved the House of Representatives, going to elections at that time might have benefited his party.

Rabi to be released only on Friday, must collect release order from Rupandehi Court

Rastriya Swatantra Party Chair Rabi Lamichhane, who has been in custody in connection with a cooperative fraud case, will be released only on Friday in accordance with an order from the Butwal bench of the High Court. Lamichhane, currently held at Nakkhu Prison in Lalitpur, will be released after completing formalities at the Rupandehi District Court. He must collect the required release documents from the court before his discharge. A large crowd gathered outside Nakkhu Prison on Thursday following news of his impending release.

Court orders release of Rastriya Swatantra Party chief Rabi Lamichhane on bail

The High Court in Butwal has ordered the release of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairperson Rabi Lamichhane on bail. According to Ram Bahadur Kunwar, the information officer of the court, Lamichhane has been ordered to be released upon depositing Rs 26 million as bail.

Rival candidates ignored at oath-taking ceremony, Chair candidate Ishwar Pokharel not invited

Ishwar Pokharel, who was defeated in the race for the CPN-UML party chair, was not invited to the oath-taking ceremony of newly elected office-bearers following the 11th general convention of the CPN-UML. Party chair KP Sharma Oli, who secured his third consecutive term, along with the party’s election commission and the presidium, did not invite Pokharel to the oath-taking ceremony held at Bhrikutimandap. Although leaders from the Pokharel camp had gathered at the party office in Thapagaun and were preparing to attend the ceremony to congratulate the elected leaders, they were reportedly ignored.

Oli’s aggressive address: We are ready to confront this govt

CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli, elected for a third term, has warned that his party is ready to confront the current interim government. Addressing newly elected office bearers and central committee members, Oli said the party would remain united and launch a decisive struggle against what he termed anti-democratic moves by the government. Speaking at the oath-taking ceremony held at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu, Oli alleged that UML leaders were facing physical attacks, fabricated cases, and actions reminiscent of the Panchayat era.“If the UML leadership is touched, the country will be pushed into crisis,” he said. “If the government tries to target the UML and its leadership through false cases, it will fall, we will bring it down.”

Cambodia–Nepal B2B Business Interaction Program 2026 in the offing

A Cambodia–Nepal B2B Business Interaction Program 2026 is set to be held with the objective of strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, investment and cultural exchange between Nepal and Cambodia. The program, scheduled to take place in Cambodia in the last week of Poush, will be organised by Juba Supplies and Maintenance Company Limited (JSM Cambodia), while Season Media of Nepal will manage the event.

NEPSE drops 10.66 points on Thursday as market ends week in red

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index declined by 10.66 points on Thursday, the final trading day of the week, closing at 2,615.03 points. Total trading volume increased to Rs 4.57 billion, up from Rs 4.05 billion recorded a day earlier. Out of the traded companies, 63 saw their share prices rise, while 194 declined and two remained unchanged. Among sectoral indices, the finance sector posted the steepest loss, falling by 1.55 percent. The hotel and tourism sector remained stable.

Prakshet Thapa Chhetri appointed co-spokesperson of Nepal Telecom

Nepal Telecom has appointed Prakshet Thapa Chhetri as its co-spokesperson. According to Nepal Telecom, Thapa Chhetri, who is currently serving as a Deputy Manager at the Office of the Chief Commercial Officer at the company’s central office, has been entrusted with the responsibility of co-spokesperson. Bishnu Rimal loses Central Committee seat after defeat in UML deputy general secretary race

Bishnu Rimal, who was defeated in the race for Deputy General Secretary during the 11th General Convention of the CPN-UML, has also failed to secure a seat as a Central Committee member, according to the final election results. Rimal had garnered 1,091 votes in the deputy general secretary election but finished fourth, falling short of victory. He later received only 630 votes in the Central Committee election, which proved insufficient for election.

Brahmin-Chhetri dominate UML office-bearer positions, representation remains limited

The 11th General Convention of the CPN-UML has resulted in a leadership structure largely dominated by Brahmin-Chhetri candidates, with limited representation from other communities. Out of the 19 elected office-bearers, 14 belong to the Brahmin-Chhetri community, accounting for 57.89 percent of the party’s top leadership positions. Only five office-bearers represent other communities. According to the election results, the non–Brahmin-Chhetri representation includes one each from the Magar, Gurung, Madhesi, Rai, and Dalit communities.
