Chinese Ambassador Chen Song met with Prime Minister (PM) Sushila Karki on Thursday afternoon at the Prime Minister’s Office. During the meeting, Ambassador Song reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Nepal, emphasizing that China respects the aspirations of the Nepali people and stands ready to assist the government as a good neighbor.
UML chair Oli reappears after 10 days, moves to Gundu
Former Prime Minister and CPN-UML chair KP Sharma Oli has reappeared publicly after 10 days. Following the Gen-Z protests of September 8 and 9, Oli had left the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar aboard an army helicopter, reportedly heading towards Shivapuri. On Thursday, he descended to Gundu, Bhaktapur.
Jhalanath Khanal’s wife Rabilaxmi Chitrakar’s left hand amputated after infection
Rabilaxmi Chitrakar, wife of senior CPN (Unified Socialist) leader Jhalanath Khanal, has had her left hand amputated. During the Gen-Z protests on September 9, protesters set her on fire at her residence. She has since been undergoing treatment at Kirtipur Burn Hospital.
Over Rs 120 billion to be reallocated from budget, earmarked for elections and reconstruction
Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal has said the government will not need to rely on donors or neighbors to fund the federal parliamentary elections scheduled for March 5. Speaking at an interaction with the newly elected executive committee of the Society of Economic Journalists-Nepal, Minister Khanal revealed that more than 1,300 projects had been identified that were never entered into the project bank despite having budget allocations. Around Rs 110 billion allocated for these projects will now be freed up, he said.

Nepal has recommended the film Anjila for the International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards (Oscars). The decision was announced Thursday by Nepal’s International Feature Film Selection Committee under the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Two films, Anjila and Gunyu Cholo, had applied for consideration. The committee ultimately selected Anjila, directed by Milan Chams, citing its technical strength, narrative presentation, emotional depth of characters, and artistic craftsmanship.
ANFA fined $10,000 for withdrawing from AFC Futsal Asian Cup qualifiers
The All Nepal Football Association (ANFA), the governing body of Nepali football, has been penalized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) for pulling out of the AFC Futsal Asian Cup qualifiers. According to the AFC’s Disciplinary and Ethics Committee, which met on August 21, ANFA has been fined USD 10,000 for withdrawing 106 days before the start of the qualifiers. The withdrawal was deemed a violation of Article 6.7 of the AFC Futsal Asian Cup Indonesia 2026 regulations.

Delayed IPOs cost energy sector over Rs 108 billion: IPPAN
Delays in issuing IPOs and right shares by the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON) have caused energy sector investors to lose over Rs 108.5 billion, according to a study by the Independent Power Producers’ Association Nepal (IPPAN). Since May 2023, 50 companies, 43 IPOs and 7 right shares, responsible for 975 MW of ongoing projects have faced construction delays due to postponed share issuance. IPPAN’s letter to Sebon on Thursday states that the delayed issuance prevented Rs 23.27 billion in capital raising, led to an additional Rs 1.240 billion in interest, increased project costs by Rs 24.30 billion, and resulted in Rs 71.78 billion in lost revenue.

Renovation work begins at Finance Ministry after Gen-Z protests
The Ministry of Finance has begun repainting and renovation work following damage caused during the Gen-Z protests on September 8 and 9. The demonstrations, which turned violent, left several key government offices in Singha Durbar vandalized, including the Finance Ministry, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. Several other administrative buildings also suffered arson and destruction.
Gold prices down Rs 900
The price of gold has gone down by Rs 900 per tola. According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, the price of gold has been set at Rs 215,200 per tola.
NEPSE halts trading after three negative circuits
Trading at the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) was suspended on Thursday following three consecutive negative circuit breakers triggered by post-protest selloffs. The NEPSE index fell 6 percent during the day. The first circuit breaker was activated just two minutes after the market opened, when the index dropped 4 percent. Trading resumed after a 20-minute halt, but the market continued to fall, triggering a second suspension at 11:23 a.m. after a further 1 percent decline, bringing the total drop to 5 percent. This halt lasted 40 minutes.
India PM Modi reaffirms India’s commitment to peace and stability with PM Karki
Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki held a phone conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. During the call, PM Karki extended her greetings to PM Modi on his 75th birthday. The Nepali Prime Minister also recalled the centuries-old friendly ties between Nepal and India and briefed PM Modi on Nepal’s recent political developments. The violent Gen-Z protests of September 8 and 9 left a deep scar on Nepal’s capital, claiming the lives of 74 people, including protesters, prisoners, and law enforcement personnel, and triggering widespread destruction across key government institutions. Amid the country’s grief, questions have emerged over why the Nepali Army did not intervene as Singha Durbar, the nation’s central administrative complex, and other critical state buildings were set ablaze.
