SURKHET: More than 35 Nepalis have reportedly been taken into custody by Indian police in connection with a theft case in Bangalore, India. The city has increasingly become a popular destination for employment among Nepalis, especially those from Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.
While Delhi and Mumbai were previously the main cities of employment for Nepalis in India, Bangalore is now seen as a safer and more promising location—particularly for families working as domestic helpers.
However, with the rising number of Nepalis seeking work there, incidents involving individuals with criminal intent have also emerged, according to Ram Bahadur BK from Achham, who has been working in Bangalore for the past 12 years. “In the past, miscreants in Delhi and Mumbai caused problems for innocent Nepalis. Now, similar issues are being seen here,” he said.
The latest case involves a burglary at the residence of S. Ramesh Babu, a 55-year-old businessman and political party official, in the HAL area’s Lal Bahadur Shastri Nagar of Bangalore. Two Nepali domestic workers, Raj and Deepa, employed at the residence for three months, allegedly committed the theft with the help of accomplices.
Ramesh Babu and his family were in Tirupati on May 27 when the burglary occurred. On May 28, he noticed that his home’s CCTV cameras were turned off and asked his neighbors to inspect the house, only to discover the theft.
Indian police have launched a manhunt for Raj, Deepa, and at least three others involved in the incident. A special task force has been formed to investigate the matter.
Meanwhile, Indian authorities have detained more than 35 Nepalis working in the area for questioning, according to locals.
