KATHMANDU: The shooting of the Hollywood film Tashi, based on the life of the first Everest climber Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, is set to begin on Monday in various locations of Mustang, Nepal.

The film, inspired by Sherpa’s historic 1953 ascent of Mt. Everest, will be shot across three local municipalities in Mustang. A large production team consisting of over 300 crew members from Hollywood, Bollywood, and Nepal has already arrived, with more on the way.

Produced by tech giant Apple, Tashi will showcase Himalayan mountaineering, Sherpa culture, and the region’s unique biodiversity.

The production has brought with it over 80 cars and vans, more than 50 trucks, and over 10 specialized vehicles equipped with restrooms, kitchens, and sleeping facilities.

Filming will take place in locations including Kuchup Terenga Monastery and Lhaki in Gharpajhong Rural Municipality, Boksi Khola and Baragung Muktichhetra’s Purang, Jharkot, Dharkajung, Phalyak playground, and Lupra Pass in Thasang Rural Municipality.

Due to the arrival of the film crew, nearly two dozen hotels in Jomsom and Puthang airports have been fully booked for a month, according to location coordinator Palgen Gurung.

Local company Wednesday Outdoor has already paid location fees to the concerned rural municipalities. Tourism entrepreneur Rakesh Bhattachan noted that with the development of the national pride Korala road, Mustang is increasingly becoming a destination for Hollywood, Bollywood, and Kollywood film shoots.

He added, “Such film projects greatly support local economic growth and promote tourism through global exposure.”

Previously, the Bollywood film Khuda Gawah was shot in Mustang when road access was limited. Now, Tashi marks the largest Hollywood production to be filmed in the region.

Mustang continues to grow as a hub for films, music videos, short movies, and documentaries, with dozens of projects completed in the last decade.
