Gulmohar in full bloom draws tourists to Jhapa’s Buddhashanti

JHAPA: The vibrant Gulmohar trees in full bloom at Barne, Buddhashanti Municipality-4, have become a major attraction, drawing thousands of tourists daily along the roadside route from Jhapa to Ilam.

The striking red flowers of the Gulmohar, set against the lush green backdrop of the Barne Tea Garden on the Mechi Highway, have turned the area into a hotspot for photography and video content, especially on platforms like TikTok. The road has even been nicknamed ‘TikTok Road’ by visitors.

“There is no official record of the number of tourists, but the crowd is increasing every day,” said Rural Municipality Chairman Manoj Prasai.

In response to the rising number of visitors, the local government has built public amenities such as drinking water facilities, toilets, and a public square. Small hotels and tea shops have also started operating in the area to cater to tourists.

The picturesque setting—where blooming Gulmohar trees line the road beside the evergreen tea garden—has captivated travelers, particularly those en route to popular destinations like Kanyam, Shree Antu, and Maipokhari in Ilam.

According to Chairman Prasai, weekends and public holidays see the highest footfall.

To enhance the area’s appeal, the municipality planted over 200 Gulmohar saplings last year and improved the infrastructure by paving a half-kilometer stretch of road with blocks near the trees.

Just a kilometer to the north, in Buddhashanti Ward No. 6, lies Koshi Province’s longest suspension bridge. Many tourists visiting the bridge also stop by to admire and photograph the blooming Gulmohar trees.

The rising popularity of the area has also led to an increase in vehicular traffic, further boosting local tourism and economic activity.
