KATHMANDU: The National Assembly has raised concerns over the mysterious death of Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal in India and called for urgent action to ensure the safety of Nepali students studying in India.
In a meeting on Tuesday, National Assembly Speaker Narayan Dahal brought the issue to the government’s attention, emphasizing the serious nature of the case.
Prakriti Lamsal, a student at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha, India, died under mysterious circumstances. The issue was first raised by lawmakers during an emergency meeting, which garnered widespread attention in the House.
Speaker Dahal urged the Nepali government to take immediate diplomatic steps to investigate the incident thoroughly, uncover the truth, and ensure justice for the late student. He further emphasized the need for a detailed inquiry into the situation and urged the government to hold responsible parties accountable.
Additionally, Speaker Dahal called on the government to create a safer environment for Nepali students studying in India and other countries. He highlighted the importance of ensuring that Nepali students can pursue their education without fear, in a secure and supportive environment.
Most of the lawmakers who spoke during the zero hour of Tuesday’s meeting drew the government’s attention to the mysterious death of Prakriti Lamsal, a student from Butwal who was studying at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha, India. They expressed concerns over the safety of Nepali students.
Lawmaker Renu Chand questioned whether Indian universities have become unsafe for Nepali students and urged the Nepali government to immediately address the issue with India.
She also expressed anger over the brutal treatment of Nepali students at KIIT University.
Lawmaker Rukmini Koirala stated that the death of Prakriti Lamsal appears suspicious and called for the government to take the initiative to investigate and ensure the safety of Nepali students.
She voiced dissatisfaction over why Nepali girls continue to fall victim to such incidents, both at home and abroad.
Lawmaker Bishnukumari Sapkota emphasized the need for diplomatic efforts to rescue the Nepali student and ensure justice through discussions with India.
