KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said that Nepal, as a proud and active member of the United Nations, highly values the world body and its continued support.
Delivering a statement at a program organized to mark 70 years of Nepal–UN partnership, Prime Minister Karki thanked the United Nations Office in Nepal for hosting the event and acknowledged the UN’s long-standing contribution to Nepal’s development and peace efforts.
“We are celebrating 70 years of working together. Nepal highly values the United Nations for its role in maintaining world peace, supporting growth, and helping us build a better future,” she said, adding that the UN has played a significant role in improving the lives of Nepalis over the years.
The Prime Minister said the milestone was an opportunity to reflect on the shared journey and to further strengthen cooperation in the years ahead. Recalling the establishment of the UN after the Second World War, she noted that peace, human rights, and development remain the organization’s core pillars and are closely interconnected.
She said the UN has delivered tangible results in health, security, and humanitarian assistance, reinforcing the global commitment that “no one will be left behind.” However, she added that the world now expects more from the UN amid emerging challenges such as climate change and rising global tensions.
Emphasizing multilateralism, PM Karki said Nepal believes the UN remains the most effective platform for dialogue and collective problem-solving, and that its role is more relevant than ever despite global changes.
She noted that Nepal joined the United Nations on December 14, 1955, and has since consistently adhered to the principles of the UN Charter. She also highlighted Nepal’s contribution to global peace, stating that the country is the largest contributor of troops to UN peace support operations.
“Our soldiers and police personnel have served in diverse regions for the cause of peace, and we are ready to extend further support if required,” she said.
Sharing a national update, Prime Minister Karki said Nepal is preparing for a smooth transition through the elections scheduled for March 5, assuring that preparations are nearly complete and the security situation has significantly improved.
She further said Nepal is on track to graduate from Least Developed Country (LDC) status by 2026, calling it a major milestone that will require sustained investment, technology transfer, and continued partnership with the United Nations.
“In an interdependent world, cooperation is not a choice but a necessity,” PM Karki said, reaffirming Nepal’s commitment to remain a strong partner of the United Nations.
