KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has stated that the government is engaging in discussions with various political parties to create a trustworthy environment for the March 5, 2026, House of Representatives election.
On Monday, during a meeting with leaders of civil society at Singha Durbar, PM Karki emphasized that the government is holding track-two dialogues with parties to foster confidence in the electoral process. She urged civil society to use its influence to bring all parties back into the process and support the election preparations.
Highlighting the legal and national importance of the election, she stressed that the polls are not merely a political decision of the current government but an unavoidable national responsibility to prevent constitutional vacancy. PM Karki also requested stakeholders to stand firmly with the government to ensure the election’s legal basis and return democracy to its proper path.
Government spokesperson and Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Jagadish Kharel, said the government plans to make the election cost-effective and avoid past mismanagement and unnecessary staff appointments, with strict monitoring throughout. Civil society representatives suggested that the government maintain focus on good governance alongside election preparations.
PM Karki is set to hold discussions with both newly registered and existing political parties at the Election Commission on Wednesday. Civil society leader Khagendra Sangraula noted that the Prime Minister appeared committed to holding the election on the scheduled date under any circumstances.
The Monday meeting included participation from Indra Adhikari, Subodhraj Pyakurel, JV Bishwakarma, Kedarbhakta Mathema, Stella Tamang, Vidyadhar Mallik, Bijaykant Karna, and Geja Sharma.
