ANNFSU dismisses Sujan Kadariya, appoints Deepak Dhami as new chair

KATHMANDU: The All Nepal National Free Students’ Union (ANNFSU), the student wing close to the CPN-UML, has officially relieved Sujan Kadariya of his duties and appointed General Secretary Deepak Dhami as its new chair.

A meeting of the organization held on Monday at Nepal Commerce Campus, Minbhawan, approved Kadariya’s resignation tendered during the Gen-Z protests of September 8 and 9, when he had announced his departure from the organization through a Facebook post. The meeting was attended by UML leader and ANNFSU in-charge Kishor Bikram Malla.

According to leaders present, the decision was taken under the directive of ‘Gund’, a key organizational figure, who instructed the leadership to move forward with Dhami as president. The meeting endorsed Kadariya’s exit unanimously and decided to forward the decision to the central committee for final approval.

Kadariya’s resignation had triggered significant turbulence within ANNFSU. After the UML began re-engaging politically in the aftermath of the Gen-Z movement, he returned to organizational activities. However, his comeback was reportedly unwelcome within the ANNFSU leadership and even by UML Chair KP Sharma Oli.

Tensions escalated last week after Kadariya organized a high-profile event at the National Assembly Hall to announce his return. This sparked a public and internal dispute between Kadariya and General Secretary Dhami, with both sides engaging in heated exchanges on social media and in public forums.

Following the growing rift, Oli directed the student wing to relieve Kadariya and appoint Dhami in his place. In line with that instruction, the organization has also decided to appoint Vice-President Anjana Shiwakoti as the new general secretary. Dhami said that all positions below the two leadership roles will remain unchanged.
