Sunrise Convention Center reduced to ruins after arson during Gen-Z protests



KATHMANDU: The Sunrise Convention Center, the largest in the country, located in Godawari, Lalitpur, was set ablaze and destroyed during the Gen-Z protests on September 8 and 9.

The incident occurred just days after the CPN-UML held its statute convention at the venue from September 5 to 7. Once inaugurated by then-Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in April 2021, the center has now turned into rubble.

Built on nearly 44 ropanis of land under the Ministry of Urban Development, the facility had a seating capacity of 3,000 and was constructed by KC–Samanantar JV at a cost of Rs 810 million. With its establishment, the Godawari area had become a bustling hub of activity.

However, following the fire set in the name of Gen-Z protests, the site has lost its status as a major attraction. In less than four years since completion, the convention center has been reduced to ruins, a casualty of political anger.
