Nepal halts implementation of skilled worker deployment procedure for South Korea

KATHMANDU: The Department of Foreign Employment has announced that it will not enforce the Procedure for Sending Skilled Workers to the Republic of Korea.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, the department said the decision follows directives from the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security. As a result, plans to send skilled Nepali workers to South Korea under the E-7 visa category through the business-to-business (B2B) model have been shelved.

The procedure had envisioned allowing authorized Nepali recruitment agencies, meeting the operational standards of the E-7 visa system, to send workers with specialized skills to Korea.

South Korea issues E-7 visas to foreign workers with technical expertise, granting them the same status and benefits as Korean employees. Nepal had proposed that workers going under this scheme should receive salaries comparable to Korean nationals, averaging around USD 3,000 (nearly Rs 400,000) per month.

However, political instability and delays in decision-making have once again stalled the process, as in previous years. This means Nepal will miss out on a significant opportunity to send high-skilled labor to South Korea at a time when demand remains high.
