534 absconding defendants arrested in a year in Jhapa



BHADRAPUR: In the fiscal year 2024/25, the District Police Office, Jhapa, along with its subordinate units, arrested 534 absconding defendants who had been convicted by various courts.

Among those apprehended, 463 are men, 70 are women, and one identifies as a sexual minority, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Khagendra Bahadur Khadka.

The arrested individuals were presented before the District Court, Jhapa. As per the court’s directives, those with remaining jail sentences were sent to prison, while those sentenced to fines were released after paying the amount.

DSP Khadka informed that a total of 248 years, 10 months, and 14 days of imprisonment were executed, and fines amounting to Rs 72,724,821 were collected.

Among the notable arrests was Khemraj Pokharel, 48, of Bhadrapur-8, who had been convicted by the Supreme Court in a rape and incest case and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Similarly, Pradeep Rai, 32, of Mechinagar-7, was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Biratnagar, Ilam bench of the High Court in 2072 BS for rape and theft.

Another significant arrest was that of Amirlagun Bishwakarma, 30, of Birtamod-8. He had been sentenced by the Patan High Court to one year, two months, and 15 days in prison and fined Rs 28,458,605 in a revenue leakage case.

The District Police Office stated that efforts are underway to further strengthen and intensify the judgment implementation campaign in the coming year.
