KATHMANDU: Prime Minister and Chair of the CPN-UML, KP Sharma Oli, stated today that those who have strayed in various directions without a clear ideological foundation cannot be brought into the fold of left unity.
Speaking at a memorial program organized in Madannagar, Balkhu, on the occasion of the anniversary of the passing of the late Madan Bhandari, the then General Secretary of the CPN-UML, and Jeevraj Ashrit, the head of the organization department, Prime Minister Oli emphasized that unity should not be an end in itself.
Instead, he stressed the need to bring others into the party by convincing them of the correct ideology.
“The tendency to oppose even correct things and create obstacles has been seen in the communist movement since its inception. Even without significant ideological differences, power struggles based on personal interests were waged. There is also a trend of dividing the party and keeping it unified in name only,” PM Oli said.
“However, the party’s direction has consistently sought the correct path. The People’s Multiparty Democracy brought forth under the leadership of Madan Bhandari has refuted the accusation against communists of being autocratic.”
Prime Minister Oli asserted that his party has always upheld the belief that the people are the source of power and has strived to establish a people’s government. He clearly stated that they have never strayed from the path of patriotism, national sovereignty, and national integrity.
He further emphasized that with their party leading the government, any regressive attempts to reinstate the monarchy are impossible and unacceptable.
He acknowledged that elements seeking to defame and overthrow the UML leadership, mistakenly believing the party could be easily toppled, have engaged in various conspiracies. However, he assured party members that the UML is prepared to face any situation and urged them to remain united and move forward with confidence.
Referring to the damage caused by right-wing extremism, racism, and anarchism in movements worldwide, he clarified that his party has avoided such shortcomings by embracing diversity as cultural richness and adopting the path of unity and peaceful competition. He also expressed his displeasure with the past practice of toppling his government due to disruptive elements within the party and forming a government through court orders during his previous tenure as Prime Minister.
The program was attended by former President Bidya Devi Bhandari, senior Vice Chairman of the UML Ishwar Pokhrel, General Secretary Shankar Pokhrel, Ashrit’s wife Maya Gyawali, and other leaders and cadres. Chairman Oli, along with other attendees, paid tribute to the deceased leaders.
