Debating hereditary rule in the 21st century is laughable: UML

KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML has strongly opposed efforts to undermine Nepal’s democratic achievements, stating that attempts to push the country back into an undemocratic past are unacceptable.

In a press release issued after its Central Secretariat meeting, the party criticized the spread of a ‘one-sided negative narrative’ that diminishes national morale and seeks to reverse democratic progress.

“Despite armed conflict, prolonged political transitions, and natural disasters like earthquakes, Nepal has made significant strides in infrastructure, social sectors, living standards, and international relations since the establishment of democracy,” the UML stated.

The party called for a deeper appreciation of democracy, freedom, and human rights, urging people to reflect on the hardships of the past and compare Nepal’s progress with the centuries-long rule of the monarchy.

“We emphasize that discussing hereditary rule in the 21st century is not only laughable but also harmful and meaningless,” read the statement issued by Rajendra Gautam, head of the UML’s Publicity and Publication Department.

The UML reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding federal democratic republicanism, inclusive governance, and social justice.

It also pledged to ensure effective implementation of the constitution, political stability, good governance, efficient public services, and economic progress.

“We are determined to strengthen the democratic system by reviewing a decade of constitutional implementation,” the statement added.
