Central committee members urge caution before demanding Oli resignation

KATHMANDU: During the ongoing CPN-UML central committee meeting, central member Laxmi Gautam advised party office-bearers to consider resigning themselves before demanding party Chair KP Sharma Oli’s resignation.

Representing Sunsari, Gautam raised concerns after hearing that some office-bearers had reportedly called for Oli’s resignation. “We have heard that some leaders in the secretariat meeting demanded the chair’s resignation. You too have served as office-bearers twice. If central members ask for your resignation, will you comply?” she asked.

Gautam also highlighted that the remaining one-year term of the party should not be rushed into a convention merely because some members are demanding resignations. “We still have a year left in our term. There is no need to hastily announce a general convention just because someone wants resignations,” she said.

Another central committee member, Romanath Oli, stressed that now is not the time to stir party controversy by seeking a replacement for Chair Oli. “The party and its leadership are already going through a crisis. Demanding resignation now? The convention to select leadership has already been announced. Let’s focus on that discussion and finalize it,” he said.

Romanath Oli further noted that grievances of party activists and the public have not fully reached the central committee. “The public has different concerns that have not yet come to this forum. The party should launch a campaign to hear the grievances of workers and citizens,” he added.
