Rabi Lamichhane taken to Nakkhu Prison, supporters kept waiting at TIA
Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) chair Rabi Lamichhane, who was flown to Kathmandu from Rupandehi Prison, was transferred directly to Nakkhu Prison in Lalitpur on Saturday. Authorities diverted him to Nakkhu without allowing supporters and party members, who had gathered at Tribhuvan International Airport to welcome him, to meet him.
Rabi Lamichhane transferred to Kathmandu after 126 days in Bhairahawa prison
Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) chair Rabi Lamichhane has been transferred to Kathmandu after spending 126 days in judicial custody at Rupandehi District Prison in Bhairahawa. Lamichhane boarded a Buddha Air flight from Bhairahawa on Saturday, while party leaders, cadres, and supporters gathered at Tribhuvan International Airport to welcome him. RSP spokesperson Manish Jha and vice-chair Swarnim Wagle, who were in Bhairahawa for party training, said they were denied permission by prison authorities to meet Lamichhane before his departure. However, Wagle later shared on social media that he managed to briefly speak with Lamichhane at the airport for about two minutes.

Supporters of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) have gathered at Tribhuvan International Airport as party chair Rabi Lamichhane is being transferred from Bhairahawa prison to Kathmandu today. Leaders, cadres, and well-wishers of the party assembled at the airport ahead of Lamichhane’s arrival, showing solidarity as he is relocated from Rupandehi to the capital.
Landslide blocks Dhadingbesi–Malekhu road
The Dhadingbesi–Malekhu road, which connects the district headquarters with the Prithvi Highway, has been completely blocked by a ‘landslide. The incident occurred at Saghutar in Nilkantha Municipality–8, where debris from above the road—including rocks and uprooted trees—fell, cutting off traffic along the route.
Dry landslide blocks Hetauda–Kathmandu road
A dry landslide has disrupted traffic along the Hetauda–Kathmandu road section. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Shyamu Aryal, spokesperson for the Makwanpur District Police Office, the landslide occurred around 9:30 a.m. today at Jyamire in Indrasarowar Rural Municipality–3, obstructing the Hetauda–Fakhel–Dakshinkali–Kathmandu route. Transportation services in the area have come to a complete halt.
Nepal begins preparations for COP-30, focus on climate finance
Nepal has started preparations for the 30th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP-30) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which will be held from November 10–21 in Belém, Brazil. The conference will focus on fossil fuel transition, forest, ocean, and biodiversity conservation, agricultural and food system transformation, human development, technology, and capacity building.
Indian Foreign Secretary to arrive on Sunday
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is arriving in Nepal on Sunday for a two-day official visit at the invitation of Nepal’s Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai. According to the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, Misri will be in Nepal on August 17 and 18, with the visit aimed at further strengthening bilateral ties between the two neighbors.
KMC forms task force for improvement of institutional schools
Kathmandu Metropolitan City has initiated steps to revoke licenses of institutional schools that are registered but not operational. The local government said it has prepared to cancel licenses after thorough monitoring and evaluation. Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol noted that some alternative schools, including Mahila Jyoti and James Namuna, have received permission to relocate to new premises. Additionally, 25 schools are currently undergoing name changes as per the metropolis’s directives.
Former UML Central Council member Dipendra Kunwar joins Maoist Centre
Dipendra Kunwar, a former Central Council member of the ruling CPN-UML, has joined the CPN (Maoist Centre). Kunwar, from Kuwakot in Baitadi, formally entered the Maoist Centre on Saturday. Active in the Maoist movement since the armed conflict period, Kunwar had aligned with the UML following party splits.
Shri Krishna Janmastami being observed today
Hindus across the country are celebrating Shri Krishna Janmastami today with deep devotion and reverence, marking the birth of Lord Krishna through various religious programs and rituals. According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Krishna was born at midnight on Bhadrakrishna Ashtami during the Dwapar Yuga, as per the lunar calendar. He is regarded as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, the preserver and protector of the universe, who appeared to vanquish evil, injustice, and malevolent forces.

Khadka honors NEA staff, stresses role of daily-wage workers in energy sector

Calls grow to include Bantawa and Chamling as official languages in Koshi Province
The recently tabled bill on official languages of government work in Koshi Province has triggered strong demands for the inclusion of Bantawa and Chamling, two major languages of the Rai community. The bill, registered in the provincial assembly on August 7, currently proposes only Maithili and Limbu as official languages for provincial government business. This has angered the Rai community, who argue that the exclusion of Rai languages undermines both their numerical strength and cultural presence in Koshi.
