Upendra Yadav says land bill favors land mafia, vows strong opposition

KATHMANDU: Chairman of Janata Samajwadi Party, Nepal (JSP), Upendra Yadav has strongly opposed the government’s land bill, alleging that it has been introduced to serve the interests of the land mafia by including provisions that allow the confiscation of forests and land.

Yadav stated that his party had already objected to the land ordinance when it was introduced, and now the same provisions have been brought back in the form of a bill.

He emphasized that the bill is not in the interest of the nation or its people and pledged to resist it through both street protests and parliamentary opposition.

“We had opposed the land ordinance because it did not serve the country or the people. Now, the government has brought a bill with the same content that benefits the land mafia. We will strongly oppose it from the streets and in the House,” he said.

On January 10, the government brought forward four ordinances, including one related to land, which were issued by President Ram Chandra Poudel.

At the time, JSP Nepal had declared that it would not support the land ordinance. As a result, when the ordinances were presented in Parliament on Magh 18, only five out of the six were tabled.

On March 6, the House of Representatives approved the government’s proposal to endorse ordinances related to cooperatives, the promotion of good governance and public service delivery, financial procedures and fiscal responsibility, privatization and improvement of the economic and business environment, and investment promotion.

Although the land ordinance had been included in the agenda for the winter session of the federal parliament, the government withdrew it due to JSP’s opposition.

However, Yadav has now expressed fresh objection, accusing the government of reintroducing the same provisions in the form of a bill, and has reiterated his party’s strong resistance.
