Fires reported in 22 places within 24 hours



KATHMANDU: A total of 25 disaster-related incidents were reported across the country between 10 am on Saturday and Sunday morning, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA). Of these, 22 incidents were related to fires.

The Authority said fires broke out in various locations due to arson, cooking gas leaks, electrical short circuits, negligence, and a lack of public awareness. Fire incidents were reported in three places in Rautahat district, and in two places each in Panchthar, Jhapa, Kaski, and Syangja.

Similarly, one fire incident was reported in each of the following districts: Morang, Bhojpur, Udayapur, Sarlahi, Kathmandu, Rupandehi, Dang, Achham, and Darchula. Additional fire incidents were reported during winter as people lit open fires for warmth, mishandled matches, or as children played in harvested rice fields.

In Kathmandu, a fire broke out in the old Dakshinkali forest area of Dakshinkali Municipality-5. The fire was brought under control with the assistance of the Area Police Office, Pharping, along with local residents.

Besides fires, a landslide was reported in Palpa, while incidents involving wild elephants occurred in two locations in Morang. One person died after being attacked by an elephant in Sundarharaicha Municipality-12, Morang.

Overall, the disasters claimed one life and left four others injured. The total estimated loss from these incidents stands at Rs 7.29 million, according to the Authority.
