Hong Kong removes transit visa requirement for Nepali passport holders

KATHMANDU: The Hong Kong government has scrapped the mandatory transit visa requirement for Nepali passport holders traveling through Hong Kong International Airport.

According to the Consulate General of Nepal in Hong Kong, the new provision—applicable to travelers remaining inside the airport’s transit area—has come into effect from Saturday, November 15, 2025.

In a press release issued Friday, the Consulate General said the decision follows continuous diplomatic efforts and formal requests made to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of China.

Hong Kong had enforced the transit visa requirement for Nepali travelers since June 2005, requiring Nepali citizens to secure a visa even when not entering the city.

With the restriction now lifted, the Consulate expressed confidence that Nepali travelers will experience greater ease and flexibility when flying via Hong Kong. It added that the decision is expected to encourage more Nepali passport holders to use Hong Kong as a transit hub.

“This commendable step by the Hong Kong government will help strengthen bilateral relations. The Consulate General extends its gratitude on behalf of the Government of Nepal,” the statement said.
