MPs draw govt’s attention to contemporary issues

KATHMANDU: Members of the National Assembly (NA) have urged the government to address pressing issues including natural disasters, inflation, corruption, and shortcomings in communication and technology.

Speaking during the Special Hour of today’s NA meeting, Nepali Congress (NC) member Kiranbabu Shrestha called for the proper use of communication and technology, stressing the need to eliminate existing anomalies in the sector.

He noted that despite political changes, the people’s living conditions had yet to improve, and urged unity among political parties to ensure economic prosperity and positive change.

Jagat Prasad Sharma emphasized strengthening federalism, describing it as the foundation for building socialism, not division. CPN (Unified Socialist) member Rajendra Laxmi Gaire reported that 122 people had died and 22 were missing due to natural disasters in the past four months, and demanded immediate relief for victims of landslides, floods, and earthquakes.

NC’s Padam Bahadur Pariyar urged political leaders who fought for change to be sincere in upholding the rule of law, lamenting a lack of energy and commitment to address current challenges.

Maoist Centre member Shree Krishna Adhikari pressed the government to quickly reopen the landslide-blocked Araniko Highway, cautioning against price hikes ahead of upcoming festivals. He called for controlling inflation and black marketeering, repairing disrupted roads, and facilitating festival-season travel through the southern border.

CPN-UML member Rukmini Koirala voiced public dissatisfaction with the government’s inability to meet expectations. She stressed the need to empower local governments and focus on core priorities such as education reform, job creation, quality healthcare, agricultural commercialization, and industrialization.
