LALITPUR: Prime Minister (PM) KP Sharma Oli has said that all social media platforms operating in Nepal must come under the legal framework.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the ‘Digital Nepal Conclave 2025’ organized by the ICT Foundation today, he stated that social media companies should be registered in accordance with Nepal’s laws, pay taxes, and fulfill all other legal obligations.
He has already directed the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology to take necessary steps to bring social media under the legal ambit.
“The Nepal government should be aware of all transactions related to information technology within the country. All social media platforms operating here must meet their legal obligations and pay taxes,” Prime Minister Oli said.
Outlining the government’s plans for the IT sector, he added, “The government works for the people and is committed to promoting the development of information technology that they want. You can earn income by investing in IT both at home and abroad—move forward with confidence, the government is with you.”
Recalling his visit to Pushpalal Mid-Hills, Oli said he was pleased to see that even elderly mothers in remote Rukum villages use Facebook, reflecting the rapid spread of technology.
He stressed that Nepal is an ideal destination for digital technology and green energy and emphasized the importance of fully utilizing artificial intelligence to achieve development and prosperity.
He noted that more than 150,000 SEE students have benefited from online education since last year as per his announcement and highlighted the need to use technology in education and development while protecting children from excessive mobile phone use.
Prime Minister Oli also pointed out that the government has recently passed an AI policy and is focusing on transforming and advancing IT development. He criticized those who, in his words, “choose to overlook progress and spread discouragement.”
Stating that the government now has a clear vision for using IT in stability, good governance, and development, he assured that the private sector will be encouraged to participate.
He further said that effective use of IT could play a vital role in improving governance and expressed the view that corruption could be reduced to zero through technology and positive changes in human behavior.
