Fault detected in India-Nepal power line, causes outage across central and eastern Nepal

KATHMANDU: A major power outage affected Kathmandu and several parts of central and eastern Nepal on Thursday evening due to a technical fault in the cross-border transmission line from India.

The disruption occurred during peak evening hours, leaving much of the country in darkness, including the federal capital.

According to Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) spokesperson Rajabhai Shilpakar, the problem originated at the Dhalkebar substation. “The fault occurred in the transmission line that connects to India,” he said.

Although electricity is not imported from India during the evening, the fault still impacted the system. “Even when there is no power inflow, the frequency must be balanced. Repair work is underway at the fault location, and electricity will be restored shortly,” he added.
