MPs urge government to make ‘Sagarmatha Sambad’ effective

KATHMANDU: Lawmakers in the House of Representatives on Thursday extended their best wishes and offered suggestions to the government for ensuring the effectiveness of the Sagarmatha Sambad, which begins in Kathmandu on Friday.

Speaking during the special hour, MPs from various parties emphasized that the dialogue presents a vital opportunity for Nepal to highlight the disproportionate impact of climate change on the country and to push for climate justice and finance from the global community.

CPN-UML MP Ishwori Gharti underscored the importance of advocating for climate financing. “Although Nepal contributes only 0.03 percent to global carbon emissions, we are bearing the brunt of a crisis we didn’t create. Sagarmatha Sambad is an opportunity to bring the plight of mountain nations to global attention,” he said.

Aam Janata Party MP Prabhu Sah expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of participation from high-level foreign delegates.

“This event has been in preparation for six years. The absence of top international figures raises questions about the credibility of our diplomacy,” he remarked.

Maoist Centre MP Purna Bahadur Gharti sought clarification from the government on the status of the proposed constitutional amendment. “There’s been no decision on which articles will be amended. The process should be inclusive and based on consensus,” he said.

Rastriya Swatantra Party MP Hari Dhakal criticized delays in appointing a new governor for Nepal Rastra Bank, calling it a “shameful mistake” that could harm the institution’s integrity.

RPP MP Bina Lama called attention to the need for infrastructure development in Dhading, particularly roads and bridges, and pushed for policies on the mining and processing of minerals from Ruby Valley.

Unified Socialist MP Metmani Chaudhary called for a constitutional amendment to limit the prime minister’s tenure to two terms.

Nepali Congress MP Ranju Kumari Jha raised the long-standing issue of land rights for residents of 70 bighas in Rajbiraj Municipality, Saptari, who have not received land ownership documents since 2009 BS.

LSP-Nepal MP Ram Prakash Chaudhary said that Madhes Province has been deprived of adequate budget allocation. He urged the government to prioritize the region in the upcoming fiscal plan.

Nagarik Unmukti Party MP Ranjita Shrestha demanded the expansion of Tikapur Airport to accommodate large commercial aircraft.

NWPP MP Prem Suwal criticized ongoing political alliances, questioning whether the Congress-UML partnership signaled a return to a non-party system.

Congress MP Sita Mijar demanded an investigation into the suspicious deaths of two prisoners in Morang District Jail. She also called for implementation of government agreements on waste management in Banchare Danda.

Similarly, CPN-UML MP Ishwor Bahadur Rijal warned against making misleading statements, saying people’s representatives must avoid causing public confusion. “Anarchy poses a serious challenge to democracy,” he added.
