MP Mohan Basnet set to be suspended after corruption case

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress lawmaker Mohan Basnet is set to be suspended from his parliamentary post following the filing of a corruption case against him by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA).

The CIAA on Thursday filed a case at the Special Court against 16 individuals, including former Minister for Information and Communications Basnet and former Chair of the Nepal Telecommunications Authority Digambar Jha, accusing them of corruption involving a loss of public property worth over Rs 3.21 billion.

The case also includes charges against a company and several officials alleged to be involved in the financial irregularities.

According to Shekhar Adhikari, press advisor to Speaker Devraj Ghimire, Basnet’s suspension as a Member of Parliament will take effect automatically following the registration of the case.

“The post will be suspended once the case is filed,” he said. “The Commission will now send an official letter to the Parliament Secretariat, and the Speaker is likely to read out the notice of suspension during Friday’s Parliament session.”

Basnet, a senior leader of the Nepali Congress, held the ministerial portfolio during the time the alleged corruption occurred.
