LALITPUR: The leaders of major political parties have emphasized that political consensus was a must for amendment to constitution.

At a programme on Public Dialogue on Constitution Amendment held in the capital city on Saturday, Nepali Congress leader Dr Minendra Rijal said that the political parties have realized an amendment to the constitution to address the issues surfaced in its implementation and added that constitution amendment was not prioritized due to the context of frequent changes in the government. “This is not an unchangeable document,” Dr Rijal argued.

Likewise, he said that some challenges in the implementation of the constitution were added as some of the laws to strengthen federalism were not drafted.

Also speaking at the event, CPN (UML) leader Raghuji Pant said the current coalition government has advanced the idea of amendment to address the complexities seen in the exercise of the constitution.

Constitution should be amended by forging consensus among the political parties and shared about the attempts taking place among the political parties.

Pant shared that the parties have not reached the stage to review federalism though some concerns have been raised on it.

Likewise, CPN (Maoist Centre) leader and former Minister for Communications and Information Technology Rekha Sharma said that amendment to the constitution was realized since the beginning adding that the constitution is a dynamic document.

Issues such as the electoral system, form of governance, proportional inclusiveness, citizenship and other contents need to be prioritized in the amendment.

Also speaking at the event, the chief whip of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Santosh Pariyar said his party is in favour of the constitution amendment adding that amending the constitution for the interests of certain political parties is not acceptable to the RSP.
