Rabi Lamichhane’s bail hearing resumes today, verdict likely

KATHMANDU: The bail hearing against Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane in the Swarnalakshmi Cooperative misappropriation case is set to continue today at the Kathmandu District Court.

Judge Madhav Prasad Adhikari is presiding over the hearing, which was adjourned last Monday and postponed yesterday due to a public holiday.

The case involves allegations that Lamichhane and 38 other defendants embezzled Rs 1.193 billion from 690 savers associated with the cooperative.

The Kathmandu District Police Range recommended filing charges against the accused on December 27, 2024, following which the Government Attorney’s Office formally registered the case.

Lamichhane, who was previously arrested on October 18 in connection with a separate fraud case involving the Suryadarshan Cooperative in Pokhara, was released on bail after 84 days in custody.

He posted bail of Rs 6.5 million January 9 and voluntarily appeared in court for the current case on Sunday.

As the hearing is expected to conclude today, the court may issue an order determining whether Lamichhane will face custody for trial or be allowed to contest the legal proceedings outside police custody.
