Govt decides to form high-level committee for festival transport management

KATHMANDU: The government has decided to establish a high-level Transport Management Committee aimed at ensuring safe and comfortable travel for passengers during festivals, especially given the current challenging situation. The committee is also tasked to promptly address transport-related complaints.

In a meeting held today, six key decisions were made, including the formation of this committee under the coordination of the Director General of the Department of Transport Management, said Keshav Kumar Sharma, Secretary at the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport.

The committee will include major stakeholders such as the Nepal Police Headquarters, the Highway Safety Division, the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, and the President of the National Federation of Transport Entrepreneurs.

Other decisions include conducting technical inspections of vehicles leaving the Kathmandu Valley during festivals, and setting up passenger assistance rooms wherever needed, said Saroj Sitaula, Senior Vice President of the National Federation of Transport Entrepreneurs.

It was also decided today that all relevant parties—including transport entrepreneurs—must ensure that passengers leaving the valley can reach their destinations easily during this period.

Furthermore, steps will be taken to assess and compensate damage to public vehicles and government offices from recent protests, and essential supplies will be provided to traffic police by the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport and the Road Safety Council.

The meeting also approved the immediate issuance of a notice forbidding the transport of weapons and other materials looted during the recent disturbances, Sitaula added.
