Sumana Shrestha quits Rastriya Swatantra Party

KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Sumana Shrestha has quit the party, according to a leader close to her.

Sumana Shrestha issued a strong statement following her decision to leave the party, criticizing the party’s internal practices and leadership. “Never admitting mistakes—making one after another, and expecting everyone in the party to bear the burden!” she said.

Shrestha also called on third-generation leaders in major political parties—including the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML—to reflect on their roles.

“Today’s situation is more a result of your leadership’s behavior than your own. So why keep carrying that burden? This is the right time. Stop worshipping your leaders. Either replace them—or leave,” she urged.

About three months ago, Shrestha resigned from her position as the party’s Joint General Secretary. However, her resignation had not been officially accepted by the party, with party president Rabi Lamichhane reportedly urging her to reconsider.

Shrestha, a proportional representation lawmaker from RSP, previously served as the Minister for Education.
