China congratulates Prime Minister Karki, pledges support

KATHMANDU: China, Nepal’s northern neighbor, has extended congratulations to newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki.

At a regular press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian responded to journalists’ questions by congratulating Karki on her appointment.

When asked about China’s stance on the appointment of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as head of Nepal’s interim government on September 12, Lin said, “China congratulates Prime Minister Karki on her new role.”

He further emphasized the longstanding friendship between China and Nepal, describing it as deep and ancient.

“China has always respected the development path chosen by the Nepali people according to their own wishes,” Lin said.

“China is ready to work with Nepal to promote the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and to advance bilateral relations through increased exchanges and cooperation in various fields.”

As of now, it is unclear whether China’s President or Premier have extended personal congratulations to Prime Minister Karki.

Meanwhile, Nepal’s southern neighbor India promptly congratulated Karki following her appointment. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed enthusiasm about the news while visiting Manipur on Saturday. Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava also personally visited Sheetal Niwas to offer his congratulations.

Notably, the Dalai Lama, currently in Dharamsala, India, has also congratulated Karki. This marks what is likely the first time the Dalai Lama has extended such congratulations to a Nepalese Prime Minister.
