KATHMANDU: Newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki is expected to expand a small-sized interim cabinet today (Sunday) following necessary consultations.
Karki, who took the oath of office on Friday night, is leading a government formed in response to the recent Gen Z movement.
“We understand consultations are ongoing, and a small cabinet will likely be formed by Sunday,” a source said.
Karki was appointed Prime Minister after discussions between President Ram Chandra Paudel and major political parties, who agreed to form an electoral government in line with the Gen-Z generation’s demands.
Her appointment came after the resignation of KP Sharma Oli, who stepped down amid mounting pressure from the movement.
On Friday night, following her swearing-in, Prime Minister Karki recommended the dissolution of the House of Representatives, which was promptly approved by President Paudel. The interim government has been tasked with holding general elections on March 5, 2026.
However, key political parties—including the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, and Maoist Centre—have expressed dissatisfaction over the dissolution of Parliament. They argue that Karki could have been appointed through a constitutional process while keeping Parliament intact.
In a move mirroring the grassroots nature of the Gen-Z movement, Karki is expected to select ministers through a public voting process, rather than relying on traditional party structures.
Names such as Kulman Ghising and Om Prakash Aryal have been widely circulated as potential ministerial candidates, both coming from outside mainstream political parties.
On Saturday, her first full day in office, Prime Minister Karki visited Gen-Z movement supporters injured during recent protests. She met with them at the Trauma Center and Civil Hospital to inquire about their condition and treatment.
