Amresh Kumar Singh raises alarm over corruption and brain drain in health sector

KATHMANDU: Independent lawmaker Dr. Amresh Kumar Singh has accused the country’s leaders, intermediaries, and government bureaucrats of exploiting the nation for personal gain.

Speaking during the special time at Thursday’s House of Representatives session, Singh said such looting has worsened the country’s situation.

He highlighted the disparity between professional qualifications and salaries, noting that it takes at least five and a half years to complete an MBBS degree and four years for a BA, yet both professionals earn similar pay.

Singh called this inequitable but stressed that the real problem lies with administrative officials serving leaders who allow the country to be plundered, later rewarding them with constitutional appointments.

Singh cited the recent removal of Ramhari Khatiwada, chairperson of the Parliamentary State Affairs and Good Governance Committee, due to controversies involving bureaucrats.

He further criticized NC leaders, referring to Foreign Minister Dr. Arju Rana as “Bhauju” and portraying her brothers-in-law, party general secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakas Sharma, as influential figures in appointments.

He claimed that senior cardiologist Dr. Raamesh Koirala resigned from Gangalal Heart Center and moved to the United States because of such political interference.

Singh also alleged that although Pradeep Paudel from NC became Health Minister, appointments in the ministry were made based on financial influence rather than merit, forcing skilled professionals like Dr. Koirala to leave the country.

Dr. Singh concluded that political favoritism has driven many top professionals abroad, depriving the nation of their expertise.
