Parliament has turned into a marketplace for brokers: Prachanda

KATHMANDU: Chair of the CPN (Maoist Centre) and leader of the main opposition, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, has accused Nepal’s two largest parties, the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML, of turning the federal parliament into a “playground for brokers.”

Speaking in Monday’s session of the House of Representatives, Dahal said the collusion between the two major parties to manipulate parliamentary processes was disgraceful and shameful for both the nation and the people.

“The tendency to make the parliament a marketplace for middlemen is an insult to democratic values,” he said.

Dahal highlighted the need for the government to seriously pursue good governance, social justice, and economic prosperity. He warned that without serious introspection and bold decisions, the situation in the country could become explosive.

Expressing deep concern over what he called the country’s looming multi-dimensional crisis, Dahal noted that the current government’s style of functioning is undermining the very dreams and commitments made during the Comprehensive Peace Accord and the drafting of the constitution.

“Are we moving forward in line with the vision we shared with the people during the peace process?” he asked.

He pointed to widespread corruption, lawlessness, and exclusion in public service delivery, noting that marginalized communities still do not receive adequate protection from the state.

Dahal also expressed dissatisfaction with the roles being played in both parliament and its committees. While many bills are passed with consensus in committees, he said, political maneuvering and interference once they reach the House floor often derail progress.
