KATHMANDU: Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal has briefed the National Assembly’s Committee on Federalism Strengthening and National Concerns about the country’s peace and security situation and preparations for the upcoming elections.
Presenting a detailed report on Thursday, Minister Aryal highlighted the Home Ministry’s efforts to restore normalcy following the Gen-Z movement and to prepare for the upcoming polls.
“After the Gen-Z demonstrations on September 8 and 9, the country was in a volatile state. There were significant losses of life and property, and following the Prime Minister’s resignation, insecurity had escalated. In that situation, the government took on the responsibility of ensuring good governance, curbing corruption, and conducting elections,” Aryal said.
He added that the interim government had to act cautiously to prevent the country from slipping into another phase of bloodshed.
“The security infrastructure was damaged and morale was low. Out of 465 police units, 448 are now operational,” Aryal informed.
He said the Home Ministry also set up support centers with the participation of Gen-Z youths to assist citizens in distress.
According to Aryal, the government successfully restored peace and security within two months.
He further informed that a judicial commission has been formed to investigate the incidents that occurred during the Gen-Z protests. “A total of 429 individuals involved in criminal acts have been arrested, and 168 cases have been registered. Of the weapons looted during the unrest, 718 have been recovered, and joint operations are ongoing to retrieve the remaining ones,” he said.
The families of those killed during the protests have been provided with Rs 1.5 million each as compensation. “Forty-five people, including three police personnel and 42 Gen-Z ‘good governance fighters,’ have been declared martyrs,” Aryal said.
He said the government has also arranged free medical treatment, ambulance services, and emergency expenses for the injured. The classification of injured persons is in its final stage, and a coordination committee led by a joint secretary has been formed to oversee the process.
