KATHMANDU: Thousands of prisoners who escaped during the Gen-z movement on September 8 and 9 are still on the run, according to government authorities.
The Department of Prison Management has stated that it is working to make the process of re-arresting these prisoners more effective and coordinated.
According to the Home Ministry, several significant decisions have been made to bring the escapees back into custody. So far, 9,008 inmates have been apprehended and returned to various prisons across the country.
To support the ongoing search, the Election Commission, security agencies, and administrative offices will be provided with updated records of the escaped prisoners, as compiled by prison authorities.
These records will also be shared with key government departments and service-oriented institutions, such as the Department of Immigration; Land Management and Records Department; Department of Transport Management; Passport Department; Department of Foreign Employment; Labour Department; Survey Department; and all 77 District Administration Offices.
These offices are known for having frequent interactions with the public, making them strategic points for identifying and tracking escapees. The Department of Prison Management also plans to publish detailed profiles of the escaped inmates in a standardized format to aid identification.
Furthermore, local and national public bodies will be instructed to verify the identity of individuals before providing public services, helping to prevent escapees from accessing government facilities or benefits.
The Department emphasized that search and arrest operations are being conducted with increased regularity, coordination, and intensity. The government remains committed to capturing all remaining fugitives and restoring law and order in the aftermath of the Gen-Z protests.
