Homes of Prachanda, senior Maoist leaders torched during Gen-Z protests

KATHMANDU: The Maoist Centre has reported that the private residences of party chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” and 18 other senior leaders were attacked, looted, and set on fire during this week’s Gen-Z protests against corruption and misgovernance.

According to preliminary data compiled by the party, the wave of arson began on September 9 when demonstrations turned violent both inside and outside the Kathmandu Valley. In addition to personal property, protesters also torched the Maoist Centre’s provincial office in Koshi Province.

Party leaders said the attacks destroyed vital documents, vehicles, and furniture, leaving several houses in ruins.

“As the principal force behind the republican transformation of Nepal, and the only party that challenged the constitution over the issue of a directly elected executive, Maoist leaders have become prime targets for infiltrators within the Gen-Z protests,” the Maoist Centre said in a statement.

Among the reported damages:

  • Prachanda’s residences in Khumaltar, Lalitpur, and Chitwan were looted, vandalized, and reduced to rubble by arson.
  • Senior Vice Chair Narayan Kaji Shrestha’s residence in Hattiban was looted and destroyed.
  • Vice Chairs Agni Prasad Sapkota, Krishna Bahadur Mahara, Nanda Kishor Pun, and Pampha Bhusal all had their homes ransacked, torched, or looted.
  • Deputy General Secretaries Barshaman Pun and Girirajmani Pokharel saw their residences vandalized.
  • Central members, including Prachanda’s daughter Ganga Dahal, Bharatpur Mayor Renu Dahal, Jivan Acharya, Madhav Sapkota, Rajan Dahal, Bishal Khadka, Yubaraj Chaulagain, Umesh Yadav, Kamal Budhathoki, and Ram Narayan Bidari, also reported homes set on fire or looted.
  • Vehicles belonging to leaders and the party’s Koshi Province office were destroyed.

Maoist Centre officials estimate that nearly all targeted homes suffered either complete or partial destruction, with personal and party property valued in the tens of millions of rupees lost.
