South Asia Journalists’ Federation condemns attacks on media in Nepal

KATHMANDU: The South Asia Journalists’ Federation (SAJF) has strongly condemned recent violent attacks targeting journalists and media institutions amid Nepal’s ongoing unrest.

In an official statement, the federation called threats, physical assaults, arbitrary detentions, and obstructions to professional work a direct attack on press freedom and the public’s right to information.

SAJF President Geetarth Pathak said ensuring the safety and respect of journalists is the government’s responsibility.

“Attacks on the media weaken the foundations of democracy, truth, and accountability,” he said, urging the Nepalese government to take immediate and decisive action to protect journalists.

Secretary-General Shakeel Ahmed highlighted the need to hold perpetrators accountable and end impunity. “Journalists must be able to work freely and fearlessly, especially during times of crisis,” he added.

Senior Vice-President Shiv Lamsal called on the government to create an environment where journalists can gather news without obstruction, noting that any attack on press and expression freedoms is unacceptable.

The federation also urged media outlets to publish verified, fact-based reporting and prevent the spread of misinformation. Civil society, political parties, and security agencies were similarly called upon to respect journalists’ rights and freedom of expression.
