Social media fraud alert: Fake stock app wipes accounts

KATHMANDU: What do you do when you come across flashy science or finance ads on social media? Do you click on the links without thinking, or do you ignore them? As information technology continues to advance, its misuse is also on the rise — and the consequences can be costly.

While social media can be a powerful tool for good, it also presents risks. The Nepal Police have recently made public a case that highlights the growing trend of online fraud through social media.

The incident serves as a warning: be careful before clicking on any unfamiliar links or downloading apps promoted on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok. According to the police, scammers are now targeting users with fake ads related to stock market insights and analysis.

Fraudsters have been promoting an app called NEPSE AI, claiming it uses artificial intelligence to analyze stock trends and offer high returns. These misleading ads lure users into downloading the app, but once installed, it opens a remote session on their device — enabling hackers to steal funds and erase digital data.

Police say they’ve received several complaints involving this app. Victims have reported that, after installing NEPSE AI, all the data on their mobile phones was wiped and significant sums were transferred out of their bank accounts.

In one such case, a user referred to as “John Doe” downloaded the app after seeing a sponsored Facebook post. Shortly after installation, his phone screen went dark for a few moments. In that time, a total of Rs. 28 lakh 61 thousand was drained from his bank accounts. Additionally, all the data and applications on his device were erased.

According to the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police, this is a new variation of digital fraud, and similar complaints are increasing.

To avoid falling victim, the Cyber Bureau has issued several safety tips:

Enable two-factor authentication on all social media accounts and banking apps.

Regularly update your passwords and avoid sharing them with anyone.

Install apps only from trusted and official app stores.

Never share information about your device with unknown individuals.

If you suspect fraud, immediately report it to your bank, financial institution, or the nearest police office.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and cautious while using social media and digital platforms.
