Govt issues new health screening guidelines for migrant workers



KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security has introduced new standards for the health screening of Nepali workers seeking foreign employment.

The revised guidelines come in response to growing complaints about negligence in the medical examination process for outgoing migrant workers. The ministry has now issued a comprehensive directive outlining mandatory health and laboratory tests that every foreign-bound worker must undergo.

According to the ministry, the updated procedure includes a detailed checklist of tests that health institutions are required to follow before clearing a worker for overseas employment.

The decision was made following a meeting of the expert committee formed under the Foreign Employment Regulations, held on June 6.

The directive was approved at the ministerial level and includes provisions on the registration, renewal, and monitoring of health institutions authorized to conduct medical screenings for migrant workers.

The ministry believes the new standards will improve the quality and reliability of health checks and ensure better protection of workers’ rights and well-being.
