Tinkune incident: Court orders Durga Prasai and seven others into custody

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu District Court has ordered Durga Prasai and seven other individuals to remain in custody as legal proceedings continue in connection with the violent pro-monarchy protest on March 28.

The order, issued by Judge Dhruba Raj Karki at midnight on Thursday, mandates that Prasai and the co-accused be held in custody until the case is resolved. However, if dissatisfied with the ruling, the defendants have the legal right to appeal to the High Court.

Those remanded to custody alongside Prasai include Saroj Gautam, Gokarna Shahi Dandapani Regmi, Sushil Baral, Keshab Basnet, and Kumar Tamang.

The court has also ordered the release of 32 other accused individuals on bail.

The charges stem from a protest led by Prasai, which turned violent, resulting in the deaths of two people. Journalist Suresh Rajak died after being set on fire by protesters.

The incident also involved widespread vandalism, arson, and looting of private and public property. Additionally, Sabin Maharjan of Kirtipur was fatally shot by police during the demonstration.

Prasai, identified as the commander of the protest, has been charged with treason, criminal mischief, attempted murder, and organized crime. The court stated that the evidence available at this stage does not support claims of innocence, warranting the remand of the accused for trial.
