Kamal Thapa: Rabindra Mishra has committed no crime

KATHMANDU:  Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal (RPP-Nepal) chair Kamal Thapa has spoken out in support of RPP senior vice-chair Rabindra Mishra, saying he has committed no crime and should be released immediately.

Mishra has been in police custody for 45 days at the Kathmandu District Police Office. He was arrested on Chaitra 15 following a royalist protest in Kathmandu that turned violent, resulting in the deaths of journalist Suresh Rajak and transport worker Sabin Maharjan. Authorities claim Mishra and Durga Prasai incited the crowd during the demonstration in Tinkune.

Police have extended his remand seven times through the Kathmandu District Court and are pursuing multiple charges.

On Tuesday, Kamal Thapa visited Mishra in custody. “This despotic and corrupt government has detained Rabindra Mishra simply for holding a dissenting opinion,” Thapa said. “Despite being imprisoned without cause for over 45 days, I found his morale and spirit to be very strong. He has committed no crime.”

Thapa also demanded the immediate release of all political detainees, including Mishra. In previous meetings with visitors, Mishra has reportedly expressed frustration over being ignored by his own party leadership.
